Opposition to Hardware Store Dropped

The city of St. Albans, Vt., is a step closer to getting a new hardware store in downtown.

A real estate firm had appealed a permit granted to Ace Hardware for a new building on the corner of Congress and Main streets.

Ernie Pomerleau of Pomerleau Real Estate tells the St. Albans Messenger the purpose of the appeal wasn't to slow the city's redevelopment efforts. Rather, it was to ensure plans are being made in a responsible manner to allow for continued growth.

One concern was how the store could create economic development when it creates a vacancy. Ace is currently located in the Pomerleau-owned St. Albans Shopping Plaza.

Ace Hardware owner Gordon Winters said he was pleased Pomerleau had decided to drop the appeal.
