Vigil for slain gay rights activist David Kato in Springfield MA.

Supporters of  gay rights are holding a candle light vigil Monday night  in front of the Federal Courthouse in Springfield Massachusetts.

The demonstration is on the eve of the oral arguments before the US  Supreme Court in two cases that challenge the validity of laws restricting gay marriage.  Leora Harpaz, a professor of constitutional law at Western New England University School of Law, says its one of the biggest cases the court is taking up this year.

A decision is not expected before June.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
