Massachusetts Early Childhood Education Commissioner Quits

The commissioner for early childhood education in Massachusetts has resigned.

Sherri Killins work to expand early childhood education opportunities during her time as commissioner was praised by many in the field.  Joan Kagen, president of Square One  in Springfield said Killins focused on professionalizing pre-school programs.

Killins participation in a mentoring program to train to become a school superintendent had raised questions about whether she was devoting enough time her $200,000 a year   state job.  Killins said her decision to step down had nothing to do with the mentoring program.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
