New Taxes Eyed as Vermont Faces Transit Money Woes

A special panel looking at the fiscal problems facing Vermont's transportation system is preparing a report for lawmakers on how to fix the problems.

Vermont also facing a downturn in state gasoline tax revenues at the same time federal aid is expected to decline. Lawmakers in the coming session are expected to grapple with where to get the money to build and maintain the state's roads and bridges.

A special committee appointed by the Legislature to make recommendations spent Friday morning putting the finishing touches on a report to lawmakers. It offered a range of options for lawmakers, ranging from to increasing fuel taxes, to a property tax on vehicles, to a levy on each vehicle mile traveled.

Committee members say increasing prices at the pump means gasoline tax revenues have fallen as more vehicle owners use fuel efficient cars, alternative fuels or drive less.
