Mass. Officials Warn of Phone Scam

The Massachusetts Office of Consumer Affairs and Business Regulation says residents who get a call from someone claiming to be from the agency asking for money are being scammed.

The agency said Tuesday a woman called them last week to say she had received a voice mail from a man who said he was from the office.

The woman called the number back and was told she had won $300,000, but would have to send in a $360 check for "insurance." She was told once the check was received, winnings would be transferred to her. She hung up.

Undersecretary of Consumer Affairs Barbara Anthony says her office will never call seeking personal information or money.

Suspicious unsolicited phone calls asking for money should be reported to the Federal Trade Commission.
