West Nile Threat Raised In Western Mass. As New Case Confirmed

Massachusetts health officials have raised the threat level for West Nile Virus in the greater  Springfield area after another case of the mosquito born disease was confirmed.   WAMC’s Paul Tuthill reports

The threat level  in the city of Chicopee was raised  to critical after officials said a case of West Nile Virus was confirmed in a horse.  Last week, a 69 year old Chicopee  man contracted the virus.  He is expected to survive. Health officials elevated the threat level to high in Springfield and its suburbs as Massachusetts is on pace to record the highest number of mosquito pools with the virus since West Nile was first detected in the state a dozen years ago.  There have been nine human cases, including one in Hampden County and one in Berkshire County.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
