Additional federal funding has been formally approved for a project to renovate the historic Union Station in Springfield Massachusetts.  WAMC”s Paul Tuthill reports.

Congressman Richard Neal announced $17 million dollars for the Union Station project and additional $ 4 million to the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority to be used for maintenance.  Springfield’s downtown train station, which closed decades ago, is to be completely renovated into a transportation center. It coincides with a federally funded $72 million dollar upgrade of  tracks and signals from Connecticut to Vermont  to bring high speed rail to the region.

The congressman’s office also announced that US Transporation Secretary Ray LaHood will be in Springfield Monday to discuss the Union Station project with local officials.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
