More State Funds Announced For Tornado Cleanup

State officials have announced grants for two western Massachusetts communities to help with on-going restoration work from last year’s tornadoes.   WAMC”s Paul Tuthill reports.

Massachusetts Energy and Environmental Affairs Secretary Rick Sullivan said Thursday, Springfield will get $1 million  for debris removal, reforestation and other repair work at nine public parks impacted by the June 1st 2011 tornado.  An additional $400thousand can be used by the city to replant trees on public property.  The town of Monson is getting $500 thousand  for clean up and repairs at public recreational areas such as ball fields, tennis courts, and hiking trails.   The grants are the fist from the $4 million in funding Governor Deval Patrick announced earlier this month on the one year anniversary of the tornados.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
