Massachusetts' only nuclear power plant is seeking permission to operate another 20 years. But as a decision nears, some high ranking state officials say a record-long federal review of the request by the owners of the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station hasn't been long enough. The Plymouth plant's license expires June 8. Its owner, Entergy, is asking the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to renew the license until 2032.
But last month, state Attorney General Martha Coakley asked the commission to delay a final decision. She cites issues raised by the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant accident in Japan last year.
And on Monday, Governor Deval Patrick cited "serious concerns that have been raised regarding public safety, public health and the environment."
An Entergy spokeswoman said the review has been comprehensive, and the plant is safe.
