Berkshire County Kid’s Place received $23,000 in federal funding to find ways to better serve children and families in their local area. Under the National Children’s Alliance in agreement with the US Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, almost $10 million was distributed to 91 abuse prevention organizations across the country.
Berkshire County Kids Place will use the funds to develop their Cultural Competence and Outreach Plan. The goal is to connect their child abuse prevention and recovery efforts with populations in Berkshire County isolated from proper care. Director Christa Collier explains…
Multicultural BRIDGE, a non-profit focused on educating the public and integrating diverse populations will be working with Berkshire County Kid’s Place. The goal of the collaboration is to increase diversity in the staff and directors of Kids Place services. Executive Director of BRIDGE Gwendolyn Hampton VanSant says that victims of trauma or abuse can sometimes feel like a racial and cultural divide exists between them and those providing services.
April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The funding arrives as organizations like Berkshire County Kid’s Place are making increased efforts to educate and inform the public of domestic and child abuse & trauma.
Child Care of the Berkshires, which was recently awarded a federal grant through the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to expand home visiting child and family care programs, said that two cities in Berkshire County were identified as areas of high incidence of child abuse.
