Some of New York’s congressional lawmakers are renewing their call for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission chair to hold a public hearing before approving a license transfer for the decommissioning of the Indian Point nuclear power plant.

U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and Representatives Eliot Engel, Nita Lowey and Sean Patrick Maloney, say New York and communities surrounding Indian Point — the Town of Cortlandt, Village of Buchanan, and the Hendrick Hudson School District — filed petitions seeking party status in February, and have requested hearings, yet the NRC has yet to rule on these requests. In September, NRC Project Manager Richard Guzman said the license transfer decision would likely come in November or December, and may be issued prior to the resolution of a hearing request. The lawmakers say the NRC should hear the state’s and communities’ concerns first. Indian Point is slated to permanently shut down in April.
