HV Assemblyman Eyes NYS Senate Seat

NYS Assemblyman Karl Brabenec

New York state Senator John Bonacic on Friday announced he would not seek re-election. And now a fellow Republican says he is seriously considering a run.

In a statement, 75-year-old Republican John Bonacic of the 42nd District says serving 20 years in the Senate is enough. Republican Assemblyman Karl Brabenec of the 98th District, in a statement on social media, says it is crucial that Republicans retain control of the Senate, and he will decide soon whether to make a bid for Bonacic’s seat. Two Democrats have already announced runs — Orange County activist Pramilla Malick, who ran against Bonacic in 2016, and Rosendale Town Councilwoman Jen Metzger, director of Citizens for Local Power. Republican state Senators Kathy Marchione and John DeFrancisco announced this week that they, too, would not seek re-election.
