Newburgh City Manager to NYSDOH: Extend PFOS Blood Testing

WAMC, Allison Dunne

The Newburgh City manager is calling on the state Department of Health to extend its PFOS blood testing program, saying not nearly enough people have been tested.

City Manager Michael Ciaravino has written to New York state Health Department Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker urging that he extend the PFOS blood testing program beyond the proposed October 31 end date. Ciaravino also wants to see what he calls “significant improvement” in the state’s outreach efforts to increase the participation rate. The state Health Department began a blood testing program in November 2016. It was May 2016 when the public learned that the city’s main drinking water source was contaminated with PFOS. No word yet on the Health Department’s response.
