NYS DOH Starts Private Well Sampling Near Stewart ANG Base

WikiMedia Commons

The New York state Department of Health has begun sampling private wells in the vicinity of Stewart Air National Guard base, which the state Department of Environmental Conservation declared a superfund site in August.

The state health department is sampling private wells in the Town of New Windsor, in the vicinity of the base, which the DEC declared a superfund site after finding that the base is a significant source of PFOS contamination found in Washington Lake, the main source of drinking water for Newburgh. According to a health department spokesperson, two private wells have been tested and both came up non-detectable for PFOS. The department Tuesday solicited participation in its private well sampling program and left notifications and contact information at the front door of residents who weren’t home.
