NY Congressional Lawmakers to USCG: Extend The Comment Period

WAMC, Allison Dunne

Congressional lawmakers from the Hudson Valley have sent a letter to the U.S. Coast Guard admiral requesting that the public have more time to comment on a controversial proposal.

The Coast Guard proposes 10 anchorage sites— basically, rest stops — for commercial vessels along the Hudson River, from Yonkers to Kingston. With the public comment period set to end September 7, U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, along with Representatives Eliot Engel, Nita Lowey and Sean Patrick Maloney, are urging the Coast Guard to extend the comment period 90 days. The Democrats say they have heard from many local elected officials who want more time. Plus, they say, several residents and business owners are just learning of the proposal because of heightened media attention.
