Westchester Receives CDBG Funds

Two congressional representatives and Governor Andrew Cuomo Tuesday announced that more than $4.3 million in federal grants have been awarded to 10 local governments in Westchester County.

The federal Community Development Block Grant funds will support 14 projects that address housing, public infrastructure, public facilities and economic development needs. These targeted high-need communities previously were ineligible to receive funding as a result of the county’s non-compliance with a fair housing settlement, essentially a standoff  between the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino. In February 2015, Governor Cuomo worked with Representatives Nita Lowey, Eliot Engel and HUD officials to broker a deal to allow the state to award CDBG funds to eligible Westchester communities, the first such awards, says Cuomo, since 2010. Bedford, Mount Kisco and Peekskill are among the communities receiving funding.
