Civil Rights Leader Puts Focus On Newburgh

A national civil rights organization says the economic woes of Newburgh deserve special attention.

Southern Christian Leadership Conference President Charles Steele says he will visit the Hudson River city this month to kick off a national tour highlighting the economic and housing issues cities like Newburgh face.

The SCLC says Newburgh had a crime rate four times higher than the statewide average in 2013 and that its unemployment is highest in the state.

Steele said that although Newburgh is up the river from the world's economic capital, New York City, the smaller city struggles to keep people employed with livable wages and revitalize its neighborhoods.
