Groups Protect Farmland In Columbia County

Flickr

Environmental and land conservation groups have protected more than 180 acres of farmland in Columbia County.

Poughkeepsie-based Scenic Hudson, the Columbia Land Conservancy, and Northeast Farm Access have protected 189 acres of productive agricultural land on two properties in Copake, supporting an initiative to make farmland available for young farmers and for experienced farmers seeking to expand their operations. The land is part of the Copake Agricultural Center project spearheaded by Northeast Farm Access, which is a private consulting group that develops community-based projects, bringing together socially responsible investors who purchase farmland and farmhouses, and invest in farm improvements, to promote sustainable agriculture.
