Maloney Declares Victory, Hayworth Not Conceding

WAMC, Allison Dunne

In New York’s 18th Congressional District, incumbent Democrat Sean Patrick Maloney delivered a victory speech, but his opponent is not conceding.

Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney leads Republican Nan Hayworth by 1,744 votes, according to unofficial results. Maloney delivered a victory speech in Newburgh shortly before midnight.

“Across four counties and scores of communities large and small and firehouses and church basements, once more the people have spoken, the campaign is over and we have won this race.”

Hayworth, Maloney’s predecessor, is not conceding. In an e-mailed statement, Hayworth campaign spokesman Terence Michos says, quote, "The race is too close to call and the ballots have been impounded as the Maloney campaign requested over the weekend. They knew the race was incredibly close, and we agree.” End quote. Again, Maloney.

“It may be close but this result is clear.”
