Hayworth Wins Independence Party Primary

A former congresswoman in the Hudson Valley has won the Independence Party line.

Republican Nan Hayworth won Tuesday’s Independence Party primary in the 18th congressional district. Democratic Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney congratulated Hayworth, who he defeated in 2012, when neither had the Independence Party line. As expected, voter turnout was light, with about 1,400 ballots cast, amounting to about 6 percent of Independence Party voters. Hayworth won in Dutchess, Putnam, and Westchester Counties, while Maloney carried Orange. According to the county boards of election, Hayworth secured 197 votes in Dutchess; 113 in Putnam; 347 in Orange; and 75 in Westchester. Maloney had 130 votes in Dutchess; 89 in Putnam; 381 in Orange; and 50 in Westchester.
