New Paltz To Mark 10th Anniversary Of Same-Sex Marriage Ceremonies

Wikimedia Commons

There is a public forum tonight to mark the 10th anniversary of same-sex marriage ceremonies in New Paltz, marriages New York State did not recognize.

Village of New Paltz Village Mayor Jason West presided over 25 same-sex marriages February 27, 2004, putting West and New York in the national spotlight. Then Governor George Pataki and former state Attorney General Eliot Spitzer said the marriages violated the state’s domestic relations law. West and others will participate in this evening’s public forum called "The New Paltz Weddings: 10 Years Later," which will feature a panel discussion, reception, and screening of a 20-minute documentary entitled "I Now Pronounce You Husband and Husband." The forum is from 7 p.m. till 9:15 p.m. at the New Paltz Village Hall. After losing re-election in 2007, West again serves as village mayor, having won election in May 2011, one month before Governor Andrew Cuomo signed a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in New York.
