Sullivan Lawmaker Wants Casino Employee Training

Christopher Chappelear

MONTICELLO – With at least one casino in operation, possibly as soon as two years from now, Sullivan County Legislator Cora Edwards issued a call to action for a local educational curriculum to train future employees.

One, and possibly, two casinos will be approved for the Sullivan-Ulster area in the new year and Edwards proposed establishment of school course work to educate area residents in the field of casino operations.

“An associate’s degree takes two years, so it is really important that we get the jobs skills now for people to have and it would also be good for us to be recognized for that kind of training and people can come from other areas that they want, or at least, have good career paths for people here in Sullivan County who want to stay here and pursue those kinds of careers,” Edwards said on Monday.

Edwards would like to see a collaboration with Sullivan Community College and Sullivan BOCES.

“We can become the premier facility in New York State to offer educational classes and be recognized as the perfect place for casino dealer training from Blackjack to Roulette to Poker and so on,” she said.
