Putnam Legislator Explores Run For County Executive

The only Democrat on the Putnam County legislature has his sights set on a higher office.

Putnam County Legislator Sam Oliverio says he is forming an exploratory committee for a 2014 run for the office of Putnam County executive. The lone Democrat on the Putnam County Legislature says he has met with the executive board of the Putnam County Democratic Committee and is now meeting with each town committee. Oliverio has served as a legislator from Putnam Valley since 1996. Republican MaryEllen Odell is Putnam County Executive. She was elected during a special election in 2011 after losing in 2010 to former state Senator Vincent Leibell, who never took office as part of a corruption plea deal. Oliverio, who is assistant principal at Putnam Valley High School, says he is studying the feasibility of his running and hopes to make a final announcement within the next few months.
