NYS Education Forum To Be Held In Westchester Monday

New York state education officials Monday afternoon, October 28, will hold their second forum on Common Core standards. The forum is the only one scheduled for the Hudson Valley.

Monday’s forum in Westchester County is the second of 12 forums being held statewide by State Education Commissioner John King and the state Board of Regents. The forums are to discuss with parents and educators the Common Core Standards and other education reforms approved by the Board of Regents. The rescheduled forums come after the controversial cancellation of the initial Common Core forums after one in Poughkeepsie in early October devolved into a shouting match. Monday’s forum in Westchester is at the Port Chester Middle School from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. Last week, three New York state assemblymembers from Westchester penned a letter to the state Board of Regents chancellor asking for the Common Core-linked tests to be discontinued, saying the tests were unfair assessments and costly to school districts. A state education official says the structure of the tests will remain the same.
