A county executive in New York’s Hudson Valley says he has reached an agreement with an organization to revitalize a county-owned amusement park, yet some county legislators are not yet convinced, and say the step forward is premature.
Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino announced Thursday that he had reached a 10-year agreement for non-profit organization Sustainable Playland to manage Rye Playland, a 1928 amusement park along the Long Island Sound that has been losing money. Yet the so-called asset management agreement needs the approval of the county’s Board of Legislators, and some members of the Democratic caucus say they are not ready to support the agreement, as they have not seen it, and they have many concerns, including Sustainable Playland’s ability to put the park on solid financial footing. The Republican Astorino says the park and recreational facility would flourish under Sustainable Playland, and help to realize his vision of a reinvented Playland for the 21st century.
