Huntington Voters Weigh Geothermal Heat For School

Voters in Huntington, Vermont, are being asked to approve a school bond issue of up to $1.26 million for a geothermal heating and cooling system for the town's elementary school.
If passed, the proposal would add $56 to the annual property tax bill on a $200,000 home in the town.

The Burlington Free Press reports the geothermal system — which would use wells to extract heat and cooling from the ground, depending on the time of year, would replace two oil-fired boilers that have served the Brewster-Pierce Memorial School for half a century.

School officials say geothermal is slightly more expensive than alternative heating systems. Its advantages include avoidance of carbon emissions and the ability to add cooling during the warmer months.
