Shokazoba (a Nigerian term for "shock absorber") is an award-winning, horn-driven dance powerhouse delivering high-energy original music that moves the body, inspires the mind, and ignites the soul. Formed in 2005 as a tribute to Fela Kuti, their mission is to promote awareness and drive positive change through their irresistibly danceable sound—New World Funk.
Their music blends wide-ranging influences and polyrhythms, creating transformative, spiritual experiences rooted in deep grooves and thought-provoking lyrics. Shokazoba’s commitment to empathy, equality, and connection shines through every performance. They've been named Best of the Valley five times by Valley Advocate readers, nominated for Live Act of the Year at the New England Music Awards, and won the 2017 Valley Music Showcase. Now approaching their 20th anniversary, they’re crafting a bold new album full of evolving energy and creativity.
Zikina unites musicians from across continents, proving that even in a divided world, we can come together to create something joyful and new. Their sound blends traditional East African instruments—including the enanga (zither), adungu (harp), and kalimba (thumb piano), all handmade by Ugandan bandleader Gideon Ampeire—with guitar, bass, and drums to craft a vibrant, modern sound. Gideon’s vocals bring emotional resonance to every performance, while his bandmates Mike Cardozo, Roston Kirk, and Kurt Eisele-Dyrli contribute dynamic rhythms, melodies, and textures.
With decades of combined experience, including performances at the UN and a shared background in West African drumming, the group creates music that invites connection, movement, and joy.
The Bandwagon Summer Series runs May–September with family-friendly concerts at parks, farms, and ballfields across Putney, Brattleboro, and Bellows Falls. Kids under 12 are free. Enjoy local food, Barr Hill cocktails, and a dedicated kids’ play area at every show.
