Join us for the lecture, Materials and Techniques of Hudson Valley Patroon Painters: Identification of Preparatory Grounds and Pigments used by Nehemiah Partridge and John Heaton in Portraits from the AIHA Collection, presented by Delaney Keenan, Judith M. Lenett Memorial Fellow.

Keenan will be presenting her work alongside conservators at the Williamstown Art Conservation Center on portraits from the Albany Institute of History & Art made in the early 18th century by artists Nehemiah Partridge and John Heaton, as well as her inquiry into their techniques and ground structures. Her project consists of surface cleaning, filling, and retouching the portraits while integrating scientific analysis such as microscopy, technical imaging, SEM-EDS, and cross-section stratigraphy to understand the preparatory grounds and pigments used by Nehemiah Partridge and his circle of contemporaries in early 18th century America (c.1700-1740).

Each academic year, the Judith M. Lenett Memorial Fellowship is awarded to select second-year students in the Williams College Graduate Program in the History of Art. The fellowship allows recipients to explore issues of conservation in the field of American art. Working closely with Williamstown + Atlantic Art Conservation Center (W+AACC) conservators, each fellow spends two semesters conserving and researching an American art object. The work culminates in a research paper, public lecture, and article in the W+AACC publication, Art Conservator.
