State police say a 24-year-old man is dead after being shot by a trooper called to investigate a reported overdose at a home in central New York.

Officials say Trooper Robert Annarino responded to a 911 call in the Oneida County town of Lee shortly after 7 p.m. Tuesday. He was directed to a bedroom where family members said a man was possibly having a seizure.

Annarino found Tyler Johnson face down on the bed with his hand under his chest. As emergency responders started to roll him over, police say Johnson resisted and clutched an 8-inch knife. Police say Johnson lunged at Annarino and the trooper shot him, fearing for his own safety and that of emergency personnel.

An autopsy was scheduled in Syracuse Wednesday afternoon.
