The Albany City Landfill apparently has a few more years before its closure.
The Rapp Road facility is now projected to reach maximum capacity during 2026. The Times Union reports the extension is possible since the amounts of commercial waste dumped have declined thanks to increased tipping fees paid by private haulers. There's been talk of building a transfer station and enhancing recycling and sustainability options. Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan’s chief of staff Brian Shea tells the newspaper the administration is moving ahead with development of a long-term solution, which might involve augmenting the city's contentious trash fee, which currently applies to two-, three-, and four-unit buildings.
