State police say nine officers were injured and one person is dead following an explosion at a home in North Haven Wednesday night.
Police had been called to a domestic violence incident. Officers and a SWAT team were negotiating with a man who had barricaded himself inside a house.
North Haven First Selectman Michael Freda said officers were trying to coax the man out of the home when there was an explosion in a barn behind the home.
“What they were doing was searching the property,” Freda said. “They went into a back barn, which was a barn in back of the actual house and then a series of explosions took place. Possibly it was a boobytrapped situation back there.”
State police spokeswoman, Trooper Kelly Grant, said they found the remains of an unidentified person inside one of the structures. The cause and manner of death is under investigation.
Kelly said nine officers were taken to the hospital for various injuries, none are believed to be life-threatening.
North Haven Deputy Police Chief Jonathan Mulhern said five of the officers are from East Haven, three are from North Haven, and one is from Branford.
Earlier reports indicated there was a woman being held hostage. But Mulhern said, "this was a lone subject in a barricaded situation."
Fire officials said there were multiple structures and cars on the property that they were damaged in the fire.
The investigation has been turned over to state police.
