The Vermont Senate is poised to debate a compromise proposal on aid-in-dying legislation that supporters are giving a strong chance of passage.
Senator Claire Ayer, lead proponent of allowing physicians to prescribe lethal medications to terminally ill patients who request it, says she believes she has the votes to pass the measure and send it back to the House.
At issue has been how many safeguards should be placed on the procedure by which patients declare their decisions to end their lives.
The compromise would have safeguards modeled after those in place in Oregon, which has had what it calls a "death with dignity" law for 15 years.
After three years, most of the state-required safeguards would be lifted.
