Vermont Activists Rally at Statehouse on May Day

More than 1,000 community activists gathered on the lawn of the Vermont Statehouse to celebrate May Day.

Traditionally, May 1 is celebrated as the international day of the worker.

Wednesday's rally in Montpelier was sponsored by the Vermont Workers Center and it drew representatives from organized labor, groups that work on behalf of immigrant farm workers,  those working to protect the environment and others.

There were health screenings and speeches in which organizers say May 1 is both a celebration of organizations' accomplishments and a recommitment to what they say is holding Vermont lawmakers accountable to implementing human rights in the state.
