Jake Peavy Helps Sox Stop Dodgers

Checking baseball scores, Jake Peavy pitched a complete-game three-hitter and the Boston Red Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 8-1 last night, becoming the first team to win a series from the NL West leaders in 2½ months. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Shane Victorino and Mike Napoli homered for the Red Sox.

The Rays were unable to complete a three-game sweep of the Yankees. Curtis Granderson lifted a sacrifice fly in the 11th inning as the Yanks beat Tampa Bay 3-2. Robinson Cano homered.

Miguel Cabrera belted his 42nd homer and drove in two runs as the Tigers completed a three-game sweep of the Mets, 11-3.

In the American League, Cleveland beat Minnesota 3-1. Baltimore passed Oakland 10-3. The White Sox bested Texas 5-2. Toronto won against Houston 2-1 and the Angels topped Seattle 7-1.

In the National League, Colorado took Miami 4-3. Milwaukee trumped Cincinnati 3-1. Philadelphia downed Arizona 9-5. St. Louis fell to Atlanta 5-2. San Francisco blanked Pittsburgh 4-0 and it was San Diego over the Cubs 3-2 in 15 innings.

In interleague play Kansas City beat Washington 6-4.

In NFL preseason action, New Orleans edged ahead of Houston 31-23 and San Francisco cruised past Minnesota 34-14.

The New York Jets say quarterback Mark Sanchez is "day-to-day" with an injured right shoulder that will sideline him for the preseason finale against Philadelphia on Thursday night.

In golf, Masters champion Adam Scott won The Barclays. Scott played bogey-free and closed with a 5-under 66.

And Lydia Ko shot a final round 6-under 64 to successfully defend her title in the Canadian Women's Open.

Finally at Saratoga Race Course, Will Take Charge won the $1 million Travers Stakes on Saturday for trainer D. Wayne Lukas.
