Berkshire DA Explains Campaign Event Hosted By Felon

Jul 19, 2018

Berkshire District Attorney Paul Caccaviello clarified the reason for his appearance at the home of a convicted felon at a campaign event this week.

Caccaviello, a Democrat, thanked Dave Leja and his wife in a now deleted Facebook post for hosting a meet and greet for his reelection campaign in Williamstown Monday night. Leja was convicted in 2005 of 42 counts of mail fraud related to seven group health insurance plans, along with 9 additional counts – including one each for obstruction of justice and witness tampering. Caccaviello expressed his gratitude to the Lejas’ hospitality in his remarks to WAMC, and said he deleted the post to protect the couple from further public scrutiny.

“He came out of incarceration and he’s running a successful business in Northern Berkshire," Caccaviello told WAMC. "That should be celebrated.”

Leja’s LinkedIn account lists him as the President of Berkshire Group Services Inc., a medical billing company based in North Adams.
