Bill Introduced To Hold Referendum On 3 Casinos Near NYC

New Jersey lawmakers introduced a bill Monday that would let voters decide whether to allow three new casinos in the northern part of the state just outside New York City.

The bill would schedule a referendum - voters would be asked to approve up to three casinos in Bergen, Essex or Hudson counties.

Crucial details, including the tax rate they would pay and how much would go to Atlantic City, would be determined in subsequent legislation.  Atlantic City fears the competition could destroy much of its remaining casino industry.

The bill comes as Hard Rock International and the Meadowlands Racetrack prepare plans for a casino at the East Rutherford track that analysts say could be among the most successful casinos in the nation.
