Springfield, MA – The Vatican's highest court has upheld a decision by the Springfield Roman Catholic Diocese to close three parishes. WAMC's Paul Tuthill reports...

The decision means that St Stanislaus Kostka in Adams, and St Patricks and St. Georges in Chicopee will not reopen as places of worship, according to Mark Dupont, spokesman for the Springfield Diocese.

"The action by the Vatican today does not suggest that we need to reuse these churches, re-start holding regular worship there, none of that is suggested by the Vatican's action, or by church law," said Dupont.

Dupont said the Vatican determined the buildings cannot be actively used for any non-religious purpose. He said the diocese would hold discussions with the successor parishes concerning the future of the three properties. Parishioners recently marked the 1000th day of a vigil to protest the closing the St. Stanislaus.
