Bennington, VT – Vermont's education commissioner says a nine-day old teacher strike in the Bennington area prompted him to revive a proposal to ban teacher strikes and prevent school boards from imposing contracts on teachers' unions. WAMC's North Country Bureau Chief Pat Bradley has more...
Commissioner Armando Vilaseca says he hopes the strike in the Bennington Southwest Supervisory Union will give a boost to the idea, which has been on his desk for two years.
Vilaseca says he's not taking sides in the Bennington strike, but he's trying to think of what's in the best interest of the students. The strike by about 300 teachers of about 3,000 students entered its third school week on Monday.
The issues that separate the two sides are salaries, health care benefits, and how much time teachers will be in contact with students during the day.
I'm Pat Bradley, WAMC News.
