A plan to sink a decommissioned ferry in Lake Champlain is being challenged by two local advocacy groups.

Nearly 30 advocacy organizations outlined a 2020 Climate Action Plan at the Vermont Statehouse this week. The groups say the proposed polices would enact critical environmental policies while strengthening Vermont’s economy.

This week, three Vermont environmental groups outlined climate priorities they believe the Vermont Legislature should consider this session.

Since President Trump was inaugurated and Republicans obtained control of Congress, there has been heightened concern over future environmental policies.  In response, advocacy groups are intensifying their grassroots organizing. Wednesday night, a coalition of Vermont groups held a webinar with Senator Bernie Sanders to discuss how to move forward on environmental issues without the support of the federal government.

The Vermont Natural Resources Council and Vermont Conservation Voters, which used to be the League of Conservation Voters, are collaborating to advance environmental policies.

The head of VNRC, which has 5,000 members and an annual budget of nearly $1 million, will lead the two groups. Vermont Conservation Voters will share the VNRC offices.

Officials are holding the first of four hearings seeking public input on  how Vermont can begin implementing its long-term goal of getting 90 percent of the state's energy from renewable sources by 2050.

Last October, the state of Vermont released its long term Comprehensive Energy Plan, which outlined strategies and set a goal of obtaining 90-percent of the state’s total energy from renewable sources by 2050.  Vermont Agency of Natural Resources Secretary Deb Markowitz chairs the Vermont Climate Cabinet.
