Microwaves actually come at us from the entire sky – the famous Cosmic Microwave Background. They are a form of light that vibrates 2 1/2 billion times a second, making it less powerful than ordinary green or red light, and far less intense than the UV that burns us at the beach.  Microwaves are part of the radio spectrum, whose waves are always non-ionizing, meaning, too weak to break atoms apart.  Because of this they cannot damage genes or cause cancer. But they can potentially heat tissue.
