WAMC Sports News: Albany Empire Wins Arena Bowl XXXII
(8/12/19) The Albany Empire defeated the Philadelphia Soul 45-27 in ArenaBowl XXXII at Times Union Center Sunday to win the title in their second year of existence.
Quentin Sims caught four touchdown passes for the Empire. Quarterback Tommy Grady was 16-for-25 for 200 yards and five scores.
In the regular season, Albany had the best record (10-2), and Philadelphia was tied for second (7-5).
Albany previously won an Arena Football League title as the Albany Firebirds in 1999.
Tanaka deals, Chapman gets Guerrero as Yanks top Jays 1-0
UNDATED (AP) — Masahiro Tanaka and Aroldis Chapman combined on a four-hitter, Brett Gardner had an RBI double, and the New York Yankees beat the Toronto Blue Jays 1-0 Sunday to end a two-game skid.
Tanaka allowed three hits while pitching into the ninth inning, walking none and striking out four. The right-hander was pulled after Brandon Drury singled to begin the ninth.
Chapman earned his AL-leading 31st save in 36 opportunities.
Toronto's stretch of 15 straight games with a home run ended, as did New York's nine-game streak of multi-homer efforts.

_Kevin Pillar hit a tiebreaking triple that scored Evan Longoria with two out in the bottom of the eighth inning, closer Will Smith followed with a two-run single in his first career at-bat and the San Francisco Giants rallied to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-6. Scooter Gennett homered into McCovey Cove and Mike Yastrzemski also went deep to help the Giants take three of four from the Phillies.
_Justin Turner hit two of Los Angeles' four homers, and Hyun-Jin Ryu (hyoon-jihn YOO) pitched seven scoreless innings of five-hit ball in the surging Dodgers' 9-3 victory over the Diamondbacks. Turner and Cody Bellinger hit back-to-back homers in the first inning as the Dodgers finished 8-2 on a 10-game homestand with yet another dominant performance,
_Yonder Alonso hit his 100th career homer during Colorado's four-run sixth inning and German Márquez pitched eight strong innings for the struggling Rockies, who beat the San Diego Padres 8-3 to snap a five-game losing streak. The Rockies won for just the seventh time in 26 games. They are 13-31 since June 21.
_Ryan Yarbrough came within an out of his first career shutout, Eric Sogard hit a solo homer and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Seattle Mariners 1-0. Yarbrough retired his final 14 batters and struck out eight while throwing 8 2/3 innings of three-hit ball, but he was replaced after 99 pitches by Emilio Pagan for the final out.
_The Atlanta Braves' bullpen overcame the residue of a punctured fire extinguisher, with four relievers combining to pitch three nervous innings and finish off the Miami Marlins 5-4. The win came less than 24 hours after the Braves allowed seven runs in the final three innings of a 7-6 loss.
_ Asdrubal Cabrera hit a tiebreaking two-run double against his former team and the Nationals bullpen finally locked down a lead in Flushing, lifting Washington over the streaking New York Mets 7-4. Nationals star Juan Soto sprained his ankle on Cabrera's bases-loaded hit in the seventh inning and left the game.
_Kris Bryant capped Chicago's four-run seventh with a three-run homer, and the Cubs rallied to beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-3 on Sunday for a split of their four-game series. Ian Happ added a solo drive in the eighth as the NL Central leaders recovered after falling behind 3-0 in the fifth..
_ Mike Minor struck out 11 in eight innings, and the Texas Rangers beat Jordan Lyles and the Milwaukee Brewers 1-0 to avoid a series sweep. Minor allowed four hits and walked one. José Leclerc finished the four-hitter for his eighth save, securing Texas' second win in six games.
_ Hunter Dozier and Jorge Soler each homered twice and the Kansas City Royals beat the Detroit Tigers 10-2 for a split of the four-game series between the worst teams in the AL Central
_ Anthony Bemboom hit a go-ahead single in the 10th inning after Kole Calhoun's solo homer tied it in the eighth, leading the Los Angeles Angels past the Boston Red Sox 5-4 for a split of their four-game series. Shohei Ohtani had three hits with a two-run single for Los Angeles.
_ Rio Ruiz hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth inning to carry the Baltimore Orioles past Houston 8-7, ending the Astros' eight-game winning streak in stunning fashion. After Houston scored three runs in the top of the ninth to go up 7-5, the Orioles answered in the bottom half against closer Roberto Osuna. A sacrifice fly by Chris Davis preceded Ruiz's clutch home run.
_ Chris Bassitt threw seven sharp innings, Matt Olson homered and the Oakland Athletics beat Lucas Giolito and the Chicago White Sox 2-0. Bassitt permitted four hits, struck out seven and walked two. Olson, Robbie Grossman and Chad Pinder had two hits apiece for the Athletics, who are fighting for position in the AL wild-card race.
_ Carlos Santana hit a grand slam in the 10th inning, and the Cleveland Indians beat the Minnesota Twins 7-3 to win the four-game series and forge another tie for the AL Central lead. Santana also had an RBI single in the third.
_ Lane Thomas hit a go-ahead grand slam in the seventh inning, Paul Goldschmidt and Dexter Fowler also homered, and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 11-9. St. Louis rallied from an 8-4 deficit to sweep the three-game series and move into second place in the NL Central, two games behind the Chicago Cubs.
49ers lose backup OL Shon Coleman to serious leg injury
UNDATED (AP) — San Francisco 49ers tackle Shon Coleman will likely miss the entire season with a serious injury to his right leg suffered in the exhibition opener.
The team said Coleman had surgery Sunday for a broken fibula and dislocated ankle. Coleman is expected to be placed on season-ending injured reserve.
Coleman was hurt on San Francisco's opening drive of the game Saturday night against Dallas when teammate Najee Toran fell into his leg on a running play. His leg was placed on an air cast on the field and Coleman was taken off on a cart.

_ Cornerback DeAndre Baker, the last of the New York Giants' three first-round draft picks, sprained his left knee in practice Sunday. Baker injured the knee doing individual drills early in the non-contact portion of the workout.
_ New York Jets kicker Chandler Catanzaro has retired after a shaky start to training camp. The 28-year-old signed with New York during the offseason for a second stint with the team. He struggled with consistency during camp, and then missed two extra points in the Jets' 31-22 preseason-opening loss to the Giants. The Jets signed kicker Taylor Bertolet to replace Catanzaro.
_ The Minnesota Vikings have acquired a new kicker in a trade with Baltimore. Kaare Vedvik has kicked and punted for the Ravens, which were set at the position with standouts Justin Tucker and Sam Koch. Vedvik spent the entire 2018 season on the non-football injury list for Baltimore after he was injured in an assault.
_ The Buffalo Bills have signed veteran defensive end Sam Acho and released guard Vlad Duccasse. Acho has eight seasons of NFL experience and spent the past four with the Chicago Bears. Acho was released by Chicago in March. Duccasse is a nine-year veteran who had one season left on the three-year contract he signed with Buffalo in 2017.
_ Titans rookie wide receiver A.J. Brown has returned to practice after hurting his left leg on the opening day of Tennessee camp.
_Pittsburgh Steelers wide receivers coach Darryl Drake has died. He was 62. The team said Drake, who joined the coaching staff in 2018, died early Sunday morning. Drake, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, played collegiately at Western Kentucky. He spent one season in the Canadian Football League .
_ Arizona Cardinals executive Ron Minegar has been arrested Saturday on suspicion of DUI. The 60-year-old Minegar is the Cardinals' executive vice president and chief operating officer.
Reed delivers clutch putts to win FedEx Cup opener
JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — Patrick Reed rallied from a two-shot deficit with three straight putts on the back nine at Liberty National that allowed him to win The Northern Trust and end 16 months without winning since his Masters title.
Reed closed with a 2-under 69 for a one-shot victory over Abraham Ancer. The victory moves him to No. 2 in the FedEx Cup, assuring he will be at the Tour Championship in two weeks for a shot at the $15 million prize.

NORTH BERWICK, Scotland (AP) — Mi Jung Hur won her third LPGA Tour title with a brilliant final round at the Ladies Scottish Open on Sunday.
The South Korean carded a closing 5-under 66 in wet conditions at The Renaissance Club to finish 20-under 264, four shots ahead of compatriot Jeongeun Lee and Thailand's Moriya Jutanugarn (juh-TAN'-uh-garn).
Biles soars to 6th US gymnastics title

Williams retires because of injury as Andreescu wins Rogers
TORONTO (AP) — Bianca Andreescu became the first Canadian to win the Rogers Cup in 50 years when Serena Williams retired because of an injury.
Andreescu was up 3-1 in the first set when Williams called for a medical timeout.
Less than a minute later, the chair umpire announced that Williams was retiring from the match, handing Andreescu her second WTA Premier title of the season.
Kevin Harvick wins NASCAR Cup race at Michigan
BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) _ Kevin Harvick has won a NASCAR Cup race at Michigan International Speedway for the second straight year, giving him two victories this year and 47 in his career.
The Stewart-Haas Racing driver pulled away from the competition in his Ford and finished more than a second ahead of Denny Hamlin.
Kyle Larson was third and was followed by Martin Truex Jr., Daniel Suarez and Kyle Busch in the Consumers Energy 400.
