#SportsReport: Steelers Blast Panthers 52-21

NFL:

Antonio Brown delivered a 53-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter and finished with eight receptions for 96 yards as the Pittsburgh Steelers won their fifth in a row, a 52-21 blowout over the Panthers. Brown was on the field hours after being stopped for speeding over 100 mph in his Porsche. Ben Roethlisberger threw for 328 yards and five touchdowns to help the Steelers improve to 6-2-1.

Nick Mullens savored the chance to get to see Eli Manning up close two summers ago at the Manning Passing Academy. Now he'll get another chance on a much bigger stage when Mullens makes his second career start for the San Francisco 49ers against Manning and the New York Giants. The Giants face the 49ers in San Francisco Monday at 8 p.m.

Even the most die-hard of Bills and Jets fans might have a tough time getting fired up about this one. Struggling offenses, quarterback questions and losing streaks are the ugly story lines marking the latest matchup of AFC East rivals. It's the first of their two meetings this season. The Bills face the Jets in the Meadowlands Sunday at 1 p.m.

Mike Vrabel won three Super Bowl rings over eight seasons with the New England Patriots. He even caught eight passes _ all for touchdowns and all thrown by Tom Brady. Then Bill Belichick traded the linebacker away to Kansas City in 2009. Vrabel says he didn't talk with Belichick for maybe a year before the men became friends who still talk a lot now. In his first season as an NFL head coach, Vrabel gets his first crack at both his old coach and former team when the Titans host the Patriots. New England faces the Titans in Tennessee at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

NCAA:

The University at Albany men’s basketball team starts their season tonight when they face the Gaels at Iona. UMass Amherst takes on the New Hampshire Wildcats tonight.

The Siena men’s basketball team won its game against George Washington 69-61.

NCAAF:

Jamie Newman hit Jack Freudenthal for a 32-yard score with just 30 seconds left to push Wake Forest past No. 22 North Carolina State, 27-23. Newman had three TD passes for the Demon Deacons entered the game as 19 ½-point underdogs before beating a ranked opponent on the road for the first time in 10 years. Ryan Finley finished 35 of 52 for 374 yards with a 35-yard touchdown pass to Emeka Emezie and a 2-yard touchdown run for the 6-3 Wolfpack.

While No. 1 Alabama and No.2 Clemson face ranked teams as big favorites, there is intrigue in the Big Ten and a Hall of Fame coach facing some heat in the Big 12. Clemson's Travis Etienne tries to make a Heisman push and UAB looks to clinch a spot in the Conference USA championship game.

NBA:

The Boston Celtics needed overtime to beat the Suns as Kyrie Irving pumped in 39 points and Marcus Morris came off the bench to add 17 and eight rebounds in a 116-109 triumph at Phoenix. Russell Westbrook sat out a second-straight game while Paul George scored 20 points in the Oklahoma City Thunder's seventh straight win, 98-80 over the Houston Rockets. The Portland Trail Blazers earned a 116-105 win over the Los Angeles Clippers as Damian Lillard dropped in 25 points and CJ McCollum added 23.

Eric Bledsoe scored 26 points and the Milwaukee Bucks marched into the Oakland and came away with a 134-111 romp over the Golden State Warriors. Giannis Antetokounmpo added 24 points, nine rebounds and four assists as the Bucks handed the Warriors their first defeat at home this season. The Warriors finished the game without Stephen Curry, who left with a strained the adductor muscle in his left leg midway through the third quarter.

NHL:

Andrei Vasilveksiy made 35 saves, Tyler Johnson had a go-ahead goal with 1:26 left in the third, and the Tampa Bay Lighting beat the New York Islanders 4-2. Vasilevskiy has allowed two or fewer goals in nine of 12 games.

Bo Horvat had two goals and two assists and the Vancouver Canucks extended their winning streak to five games with an 8-5 victory over the Boston Bruins on Thursday night. Loui Eriksson added two goals and an assist and spurred a five-goal outbust in the second period for Vancouver.

Rasmus Ristolainen scored at 1:38 of overtime to lead the Buffalo Sabres to a 6-5 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday night. Vladimir Sobotka and Jeff Skinner each scored twice and Conor Sheary added a goal for the Sabres.

The harassment trial of former Ottawa Senators assistant general manager Randy Lee has been postponed a day before it was to start. The nonjury trial in Buffalo has been rescheduled for Dec. 20. Lee is accused of making lewd comments and rubbing the shoulders of a 19-year-old male hotel shuttle driver while attending the NHL's pre-draft scouting combine in Buffalo in May.

The founding owner of the Minnesota Wild has died from cancer at age 78. The Wild said Bob Naegele (NAY'-glee) Jr. died Wednesday night with his family by his side. Players will wear a jersey patch with his initials for the remainder of the season. Naegele was the lead investor in the expansion franchise that began play in 2000, eight seasons after the North Stars left Minnesota for Dallas.

PGA:

Matt Kuchar is part of a three-way tie for the lead through the opening round of the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico. Kuchar fired a 7-under 64 to tie Dominic Bozzelli and PGA Tour rookie Kramer Hickok. Kuchar missed just two fairways as he continued his quest for his first title since 2014.

Paul Goydos and Tim Petrovic share the lead in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship after carding 8-under 63s in the opening round at Phoenix Country Club. Goydos eagled No. 1 and closed with a birdie on the par-5 18th. Petrovic eagled the 306-yard, par-4 fifth and rebounded from a bogey on the par-4 17th with a birdie on 18. Scott McCarron is alone in third, two strokes off the pace and one ahead of Glen Day. Bernhard Langer is seven shots back and Scott Parel eight off the pace. Langer and Parel are 1-2 respectively in the standings and can clinch the season title with a win here.

MLB:

Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez had surgery on his left shoulder, which could slow him during spring training but is not likely to keep him out of the lineup on opening day. New York general manager Brian Cashman made the announcement at the general managers' meetings, hours after the Yankees finalized an $8 million, one-year contract with CC Sabathia. The 38-year-old left-hander said 2019 will be his final season.

The World Series-champion Boston Red Sox and Cleveland Indians each landed two players on the American League Silver Slugger team. Red Sox stars Mookie Betts and J.D. Martinez are on the squad, as are infielders Jose Ramirez and Francisco Lindor of the Indians. Colorado has a major league-high three players on the team: Nolan Arenado, Trevor Story and German Marquez.

A person familiar with the agenda tells The Associated Press that baseball owners plan to vote on a new term for Commissioner Rob Manfred when they meet in Atlanta next week. The person also says the docket will also include a new television contract with Fox and an agreement for in-game cut-ins with the subscription video streaming service DAZN. Manfred was elected commissioner in August 2014 to succeed Bud Selig and started a five-year term the following Jan. 25.

Deputy Commissioner Dan Halem said Major League Baseball and its players' union likely will not decide until the eve of spring training whether to change rules in an effort to increase action on the field next year. Halem said MLB wants the game to be played in a way that's compelling for its audience, including the younger audience.

Hall of Famers, former teammates and winners of the Willie Mac Award attended a celebration of Willie McCovey's life on a picture-perfect day in San Francisco. McCovey was remembered Thursday as an example of humility. McCovey died Oct. 31 at age 80 after suffering from ongoing health issues.
