#SportsReport: Cleveland Downs Toronto To Advance To The World Series

MLB:

In baseball, Toronto was eliminated from World Series contention as Cleveland blanked the Blue Jays 3-0. The Indians are the American League champions for the first time since 1997 following Game 5 of the ALCS. Cleveland will face the winner of the Chicago/Los Angeles series in the World Series. Meanwhile Chicago blasted Los Angeles 10-2 to even the series at 2 games apiece.

NHL:

In the NHL, Detroit edged the Rangers 2-1 and it was Winnipeg over Toronto 5-4.

The Boston Bruins won twice and lost once during their season-opening trip despite missing center Patrice Bergeron because of a lower-body injury. When they host the New Jersey Devils at TD Garden in their home opener tonight, the Bruins are expected to have their scoring leader back. Bergeron practiced with the Bruins yesterday at Warrior Ice Arena for the first time since he suffered the injury near the end of practice Oct. 12.

NBA:

In NBA preseason, the Knicks topped Boston 121-96, Toronto won against Detroit 103-92, Minnesota won against Memphis 101-94, Milwaukee bested Indiana 111-103, Houston beat Dallas 106-91, Portland defeated Utah 88-84, and it was Golden State over the Lakers 123-112.

Jurors have cleared NBA star Derrick Rose and two friends in a lawsuit that accused them of gang raping his ex-girlfriend when she was incapacitated from drugs or alcohol. Neither side denied the three men had sex with the woman in August 2013, but the issue was whether she consented or was too intoxicated to do so. Defense lawyers tarred the woman as a liar who tried to sway jurors through her tears to get at Rose's fortune. They claimed she was angry he had dumped her and set him up so she could bring the lawsuit in hopes of a big payoff. The woman's lawyer called the men "sexual deviants" and said they conspired to gang-rape her after she was drunk and incapable of consenting to sex.

NFL:

On Thursday Night Football, Chicago is in Green Bay to face the Packers at 8 p.m.

Bills running back LeSean McCoy left Wednesday's practice early due to tightness in his hamstring. His availability for Sunday's game at Miami is uncertain. McCoy has rushed for 470 yards and scored six touchdowns during Buffalo's current four-game winning streak.

The Seattle Seahawks still aren't sure strong safety Kam Chancellor will be able to play Sunday against Arizona. Coach Pete Carroll said Wednesday that Chancellor remained day-to-day with a groin injury suffered last week during practice. He missed last Sunday's win over Atlanta.

The Bengals are defending linebacker Vontaze Burfict's actions during a loss to New England, which drew a $75,000 fine from the league yesterday. A person who spoke on condition of anonymity says Burfict was fined for stepping on Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount after he scored a touchdown near the end of New England's 35-17 win on Sunday. Coach Marvin Lewis has defended Burfict, saying he did nothing wrong.

Elsewhere around the NFL:

— Jets coach Todd Bowles has announced that Geno Smith will start at quarterback against the Ravens this week instead of Ryan Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick has thrown a league-high 11 interceptions and just five touchdowns during the Jets' 1-5 start.

— Buccaneers defensive tackle Gerald McCoy returned to practice after the three-time Pro Bowl selection missed the team's win over the Panthers with a calf injury. However, running back Doug Martin, defensive linemen Robert Ayers and Clinton McDonald still aren't practicing and could miss Sunday's matchup with the 49ers.

— Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco missed practice with a right shoulder injury but says he expects to play Sunday against the Jets. Coach John Harbaugh says the quarterback could play even if he doesn't practice this week. The injury occurred last Sunday during a 27-23 loss to the New York Giants.

— Dolphins safety Reshad Jones is done the season with a shoulder injury suffered in Sunday's win over the Steelers. The seven-year veteran hasn't missed a game because of injury in the past five seasons.
