MLB:

In baseball, Justin Turner's two-run triple capped a four-run seventh inning sending the Dodgers to a 4-3 win over Washington in the fifth and deciding game of the NLDS. The Dodgers will face the Cubs in the NLCS starting Saturday.

Tonight at 8 p.m., Toronto is in Cleveland to start Game 1 of the American League Championship Series.

Jon Lester has been named the Cubs Game 1 starter against the Dodgers Saturday in the NLCS. Lester went 19-5 with a 2.44 ERA and 197 strike outs during the season. He also pitched eight sparkling innings in the Cubs' 1-0 victory over San Francisco in their playoff opener last Friday.

Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee. Boston said Wednesday the procedure, a partial medial meniscectomy and chondroplasty, was successful and he is expected to be ready for spring training.

NFL:

On Thursday Night Football, San Diego beat Denver 21-13. Phillip Rivers threw a touchdown pass and Josh Lambo added four field goals to help San Diego top the Broncos 21-13. Rivers had 178 yards passing to supplant Hall of Famer Dan Fouts as the Chargers all-time leading passer. San Diego is now 2-4, while the Broncos dropped to 4-2.

On Sunday at 1 p.m., Colin Kapernick and the San Francisco 49ers are in Buffalo to take on the Bills, Baltimore is facing the Giants in the Meadowlands, and Cincinnati is in Foxboro to take on New England. On Monday the Jets go head-to-head with Arizona.

This summer during training camp, New England Patriots fans never missed an opportunity to let Tom Brady know they were thinking about him. He was weeks away from the start of his four-game "Deflategate" suspension, and every time he stepped on the field he was showered with cheers and serenaded with "Brady! Brady! Brady!" chants. After a successful regular-season debut at Cleveland last week, Sunday is Tom Terrific's homecoming.

New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, center Nick Mangold and linebacker David Harris all sat out team drills at practice while recovering from injuries. Revis missed the game at Pittsburgh after tweaking a hamstring against Seattle on October 2nd. He says Thursday he did individual drills and felt good after running at top speed for the first time since getting hurt, but his availability for the game at Arizona on Monday night remains uncertain.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton was a full participant in practice Thursday, an indication the league's reigning MVP will likely play Sunday against New Orleans. Coach Ron Rivera says Newton remains in the NFL's concussion protocol, and doesn't know when he might be cleared to play. Newton missed Monday night's loss to Tampa Bay after sustaining the concussion against Atlanta Oct. 2.

In other NFL news:

— Washington coach Jay Gruden says tight end Jordan Reed has been diagnosed with a concussion, the sixth in his professional and college career. The Redskins leading receiver must be cleared from the NFL's concussion protocol before returning to practice or play in Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

— Rookie quarterback Cody Kessler of the Browns has been cleared to start Sunday's game with Tennessee. He was injured in the first quarter of last week's loss to the Patriots and didn't return.

— Miami Dolphins rookie guard Laremy Tunsil says he expects to play Sunday after missing last week's game when he hurt himself coming out of the shower. Tunsil said he sprained his right ankle hours before the start of Sunday's loss to Tennessee.

NHL:

In the NHL, the Rangers topped the Islanders 5-3, Montreal won against Buffalo 4-1, Boston doubled up Columbus 6-3, Florida edged New Jersey 2-1, Tampa beat Detroit 6-4, Winnipeg slid past Carolina 5-4, Pittsburgh beat Washington in a shootout 3-2, St. Louis won against Minnesota 3-2, and it was Dallas over Anaheim 4-2.

The Los Angeles Kings have placed Jonathan Quick on injured reserve after the star goalie got hurt in the first period of their season opener. Quick incurred an unspecified lower-body injury in the loss to San Jose Wednesday. He was a finalist for the Vezina Trophy last season.

In other NHL news:

— The Buffalo Sabres have signed the architect of their rebuilding plan, general manager Tim Murray, to a multiyear contract extension. Since being hired in January 2014, Murray has undertaken a top-to-bottom overhaul of the Sabres' roster, purging high-priced and aging veterans and rebuilding the team through trades and the draft.

NBA:

NCAA:

The University of Vermont hockey team won one out of two games this past weekend, following the suspension of four players for five games after an off-campus party at which hazing occurred. WPTZ-TV reports captains Mario Puskarich and Brendan Bradley and assistant captains Chris Muscoby and Anthony Petruzzelli were suspended a week ago.

John Walker threw a 44-yard touchdown pass to Daryl Wilson to give Presbyterian the lead and the defense held off Monmouth's late drive for a 17-13 victory Thursday night. Lavon Chaney led Monmouth with 154 yards rushing and two TDs.

Horse Racing:

Face of Winner pulled an 18-1 upset Thursday in the $90,000 allowance feature at Belmont Park. The 4-year-old trained by Gustavo Delgado rallied six-wide at the top of the stretch en route to a 1 1/4-length victory.

PGA:

Scott Piercy began the new PGA Tour season by pouring in putts and setting the course record with a 10-under 62 for a two-shot lead after the first round of the Safeway Open. Piercy made 12 birdies in nearly perfect morning conditions. Only three of the putts were from inside 10 feet, and he even missed a pair of birdie chances from inside 8 feet. Paul Casey birdied his last three holes for a 64. Patton Kizzire also shot a 64. Phil Mickelson shot a 69.

LPGA:

American Alison Lee shot an opening-round 7-under 65 to finish the first round of the LPGA's KEB HanaBank Championship in South Korea in first place. She tops five players by three shots. The round of golf was the last for Hall of Famer Se Ri Pak, who ended her career with an 8-over 80.
