NFL:

The Philadelphia Eagles have hired Doug Pederson to be their coach. Pederson was Kansas City's offensive coordinator the past three seasons. Pederson accepted the offer to become Philadelphia's coach last week. The team had to wait for the Chiefs to be eliminated from the playoffs before making it official.

The Los Angeles Rams and San Diego Chargers have held their first meeting to discuss sharing a stadium that is under construction in Inglewood. The Chargers have a one-year option to reach a lease agreement and become a tenant of the stadium whose construction is being headed by Rams owner Stan Kroenke. NFL owners approved the Rams' move from St. Louis and the Chargers' option to leave San Diego at a meeting last week.

Panthers coach Ron Rivera says defensive end Jared Allen has a broken foot and is doubtful for Sunday's NFC championship game at Arizona. Allen sustained the injury in the fourth quarter of Carolina's 31-24 win over Seattle on Sunday but finished the game. Rivera didn't specify which foot was injured.

MLB:

Rhode Island State Police officials say they are close to completing a years-long investigation into former Major League Baseball pitcher Curt Schilling's bankrupt 38 Studios. The Providence Journal reports Colonel Steven O'Donnell said Saturday that the possibility of criminal prosecution in the case is "still out there," but he can't predict exactly when the investigation will conclude.

The Detroit Tigers have landed a power-hitting outfielder, and it's not Yoenis Cespedes.

A person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press the Tigers have agreed to a six-year, $132.75 million contract with free-agent outfielder Justin Upton. The deal is pending a physical, and Upton can opt out after two seasons.

Upton hit .251 with 26 home runs and 81 RBIs for the San Diego Padres last season.

In other baseball news:

— Miami Marlins second baseman and reigning National League batting champ Dee Gordon has signed a five-year, $50 million contract that includes a $14 million club option for the 2021 season. Gordon had a breakout season for Miami, hitting .333 with 205 hits and 58 stolen bases.

— The Kansas City Royals finalized their $17.5 million, two-year deal with Lorenzo Cain. The 29-year-old Cain is coming off the best year of his six-year career, hitting .307 with 16 homers and 72 RBIs. He was second in the American League with 28 stolen bases and became the first Royals player since 2011 to eclipse 100 runs scored. He finished third in voting for the AL MVP award.

Marathon:

A Massachusetts woman is kicking off her quest to run seven marathons in seven days on seven continents, as one of 15 competitors from around the globe attempting the "World Marathon Challenge." Becca Pizzi, a 35-year-old day care center operator from Belmont, is heading to Antarctica for a race this Saturday, followed by marathons in Chile, Miami, Spain, Morocco, the United Arab Emirates and Australia.

Tennis:

Venus Williams is one and done at the Australian Open. The eighth seed and seven-time major winner was a first-round upset victim in her 16th trip to the Australian Open, losing to Johanna Konta, 6-4, 6-2. It was the eighth time Williams has lost in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament, and the third in Australia.

An upset on the men's side as fifth seed Rafael Nadal goes down to Fernando Verdasco 7-6 (6), 4-6, 3-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the first round.

Men's second seed Andy Murray dropped just six games in winning his opening-round match in straight sets. Other winners on the men's bracket include 13th seed Milos Raonic.

No. 11 Kevin Anderson had to retire in his fourth set against American Rajeev Ram

First-round winners on the women's side include third seed Garbine Muguruza, ninth seed Karolina Pliskova, 11th seed Timea Bacsinszky and No. 15 Madison Keys, all in straight sets.

Tennis – Match Fixing:

Andy Murray thinks it's "hypocritical" that tennis tournaments are sponsored by betting companies as the sport tries to combat match-fixing. A day after reports by BBC and BuzzFeed alleged that tennis authorities were suppressing evidence of match-fixing at the sport's highest level, Murray said he didn't agree with the fact the Australian Open is being sponsored this year by a London-based betting agency.

Murray also said the tours should do a better job educating players — especially younger ones — what to do in case they are approached by match fixers. Murray says he "was never warned about that or told about that or anyone said to me how you should handle that if you're in that situation."

OBIT:

The Chicago Bulls have confirmed that longtime NBA head coach and assistant Johnny Bach has died at 91. Bach's defensive expertise as an assistant coach helped the Chicago Bulls win three NBA titles from 1991 to 1993. He was head coach of the Warriors from 1983-86 and also was an assistant for Charlotte, Detroit and Washington. Bach was the coach at Fordham from 1950-68 and at Penn State from 1968-77. Bulls executive vice president of basketball operations John Paxson says Bach was "a true treasure in the world of basketball."
