Sports Report: Jets Beat Colts For Second Straight Win

New York Jets Stadium

NFL:

In the NFL on Monday Night Football, the Jets bested Indianapolis 20-7. Ryan Fitzpatrick threw two touchdown passes and the Jets' defense forced five turnovers. The Jets are 2-0 for the first time since 2011. Indianapolis has lost back-to-back games for only the second time in Andrew Luck's four-year career.

The Jacksonville Jaguars could be without running back Denard Robinson for several weeks. Robinson sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee in last Sunday's 23-20 win over Miami. His injury leaves the Jaguars thin at the position. Toby Gerhart missed the first two games with an abdominal strain. It's unclear whether Gerhart will be able to practice this week and play at New England on Sunday.

The Dallas Cowboys have a clearer timetable for the return of Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo, who broke his left collarbone in Sunday's win at Philadelphia. The team says Romo is expected to miss about two months but will not require surgery. Coach Jason Garrett says tests revealed no ligament damage for Romo after the second broken collarbone of his career. Romo was injured while getting sacked in the third quarter of a 20-10 victory over the Eagles.

Also in the NFL:

Quarterback Jay Cutler's hamstring injury is better than the Chicago Bears initially feared, but his status for the team's next game is uncertain. Coach John Fox said Monday that tests showed no major damage, and he wouldn't say if Jimmy Clausen would start when they visit defending NFC champion Seattle Seahawks this Sunday. Cutler was injured trying to make a tackle after getting intercepted in Sunday's 48-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.

Packers coach Mike McCarthy says running back Eddie Lacy could be on the field when the team holds practice Thursday. Lacy suffered an ankle injury in the Packers' 27-17 win over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday night. McCarthy wouldn't rule him out for next Monday's game against Kansas City.

Houston Texans coach Bill O'Brien didn't rule out star running back Arian Foster returning to the lineup this week. O'Brien said today that Foster is listed as day to day ahead of the Texans' Week 3 home date against Tampa Bay. Foster injured a groin during training camp, causing him to miss the entire preseason and the first two games of the regular season.

MLB:

In baseball, in the American League, David Price tossed seven shutout innings and the Toronto Blue Jays stretched their lead in the AL East to 3 ½ games by downing the second-place New York Yankees, 4-2. Boston is out of the AL East cellar after Xander Bogaerts hit a grand slam in the eighth inning to send the Red Sox past Tampa Bay, 8-7. David Ortiz collected his 99th RBI on a night he was honored at Fenway Park for collecting his 500th career homer., and Houston doubled up the Angels 6-3. In a double header the White Sox blanked Detroit 2-0 in the first game and then again 3-2 in the second.

In the National League, the Mets blanked Atlanta 4-0 to extend their lead to 6 ½ games in the NL East over Washington, the Cubs bested Milwaukee 9-5, St. Louis edged Cincinnati 2-1, Pittsburgh tripled up Colorado 9-3, and it was Arizona over the Dodgers 8-4.

In interleague play, the Nationals and Orioles were rained out in Washington. The game will be made up on Thursday afternoon.

Now that the Pawtucket Red Sox have officially ended their pursuit of waterfront land in downtown Providence for a new ballpark, many people are wondering what that means for the future of the team and the Ocean State. Governor Gina Raimondo says she wants to try to keep the PawSox in Rhode Island as long as it makes sense for taxpayers. The team says it's considering its options.

Cardinals All-Star catcher Yadier Molina hopes to return during the regular season after being diagnosed with a partially torn ligament in his left thumb. General manager John Mozeliak says Molina's status will be determined by how things progress with the injury in the next 5-7 days. Molina missed about two months last season with a torn ligament in his right thumb, but the team says the latest injury on his glove hand isn't as severe. Tony Cruz will be the everyday catcher for now for St. Louis, which led the NL Central by four games with 13 to go.

NHL:

In NHL preseason play, the Rangers doubled up New Jersey 6-3, Philadelphia beat the Islanders 5-3, Buffalo defeated Minnesota 3-2, Pittsburgh skated past Columbus 1-0, Washington blanked Carolina 2-0, Edmonton doubled up Calgary 4-2, Edmonton won against Calgary 3-1, Los Angeles trumped Arizona 5-1, and it was Vancouver over San Jose in overtime 1-0.

Goalie John Gibson has agreed to a three-year, $6.9 million contract extension with the Anaheim Ducks. The 22-year-old has won 16 NHL games over the past two seasons with the Ducks and is competing with two other goalies for one of two spots on the roster.

John Tortorella is prepared to make a comeback at coaching hockey — on a temporary basis, at least. USA Hockey has announced that Tortorella has been selected to coach the United States national team competing in the World Cup of Hockey tournament next year. Tortorella has been out of the NHL since May 2014, when he was fired after one season of coaching the Vancouver Canucks.

Golf:

Jason Day has moved into the top spot of the world rankings in golf. The PGA Championship winner has won two of the three FedEx Cup playoff events, including Sunday's victory at the BMW Championship. Rory McIlroy slipped one spot to second, followed by Jordan Spieth.

WNBA:

In the WNBA, Indiana beat Chicago 100-89.

Tennis:

Ex-tennis pro James Blake has met with New York's mayor and police commissioner to discuss how he was tackled by a policeman during a mistaken arrest.

Blake describes Monday's meeting as productive. He says he has confidence Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio is making changes that will have a lasting impact.

Surveillance video of Blake's Sept. 9 arrest outside a Manhattan hotel shows the officer charge at him, grab him by the arm and roughly take him to the ground. The officer has been placed on desk duty.

Blake had said the officer should lose his job. Following the meeting he says he understands the officer has rights and he'll respect the legal process.

Police say Blake was mistaken for a crime suspect who looks just like him.
