Sports Report: Team Irvin Tops Team Carter In Pro Bowl 32-28

NFL:

Jimmy Graham grabbed two touchdown passes, including a 1-yard scoring grab from Matt Ryan on fourth down with 3:10 remaining to lift Team Irvin past Team Carter 32-28 in the Pro Bowl. Matthew Stafford was the offensive game MVP after throwing for 316 yards and two TDs. J.J. Watt came away with defensive MVP honors by intercepting a pass and recovering a fumble.

The New England Patriots should be on their way to the Super Bowl in Arizona before a major snowstorm arrives. The team plans to leave Logan Airport in Boston at 12:30 p.m. today after a City Hall rally scheduled for 11 a.m. Light snow is expected at mid-day before intensifying at night. The Seahawks arrived yesterday.

Meanwhile multiple sources are reporting that Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon has failed another drug test and may be subject to another one-year suspension.

NBA:

In the NBA, Golden State topped Boston 114-111, Toronto beat Detroit 114-110, San Antonio bested Milwaukee 101-95, Washington won against Denver in overtime 117-115, Houston defeated the Lakers 99-87, Atlanta topped Minnesota 112-100, New Orleans squeaked by Dallas 109-106, Cleveland bested Oklahoma City 108-98, Miami beat Chicago 96-84, Indiana defeated Orlando 106-99.

NHL:

John Tavares of the New York Islanders matched a record with four goals, and Team Toews beat Team Foligno 17-12 last night in the highest-scoring NHL All-Star game in Columbus. The wild, no-defense exhibition even featured a fake fight along with goals in bunches. Ryan Johansen, of the hometown Columbus Blue Jackets, had two goals for the losing team but still won the MVP award in voting by fans on Twitter.

NCAA:

The second-ranked Virginia Cavaliers kept their perfect season intact, while Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski picked up a milestone victory.

The Cavs improved to 19-0 by pulling out a 50-47 triumph over Virginia Tech. Virginia trailed by as many as 10 before Justin Anderson scored eight of his 12 points during a late 12-0 run.

The Hokies appeared poised to upset their state rivals after a 30-9 run gave them a 43-33 lead.

Krzyzewski also needed a comeback to become the first coach in Division I men's basketball history with 1,000 victories. Tyus Jones scored 22 points and the fifth-ranked Blue Devils went on an 18-2 run down the stretch to beat St. John's 77-68 in New York. Jahlil Okafor (jah-LIHL' OH'-kah-fohr) had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Duke, which trailed by 10 with 8 1/2 minutes remaining.

Dre Wills scored a career-high 20 points to lead Vermont to a 61-50 win over Massachusetts-Lowell yesterday. Ethan O'Day added 13 points, and Hector Harold and Kurt Steidl 10 apiece for the Catamounts. Jahad Thomas had 20 points, Matt Harris 13 and Chad Holley 10 for the River Hawks.

In women’s top 25 college basketball, No. 2 UConn crushed Cincinnati 96-31.

MLB:

An attorney representing the family of Chicago Cubs great Ernie Banks says the Hall of Famer died after suffering a heart attack. Mark Bogen spoke alongside Banks' widow, Liz. He said Banks suffered a heart attack on Friday, the same day he died.

Banks spent his entire 19-year career with the Cubs. He hit 512 home runs and was twice named the National League's Most Valuable Player.

AUSTRALIAN OPEN:

Serena Williams has moved into the Australian Open quarterfinals by downing the woman who beat her in the second round of last year's French Open.

Williams had 17 aces and 41 winners in a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Garbine Muguruza. The top-seeded Williams settled down after committing two double faults and 14 unforced errors in the opening set.

Dominika Cibulkova moved into the quarters with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win over two-time champion Victoria Azarenka. The 10th-ranked Cibulkova pounded 44 winners and broke former No. 1-ranked Azarenka's serve seven times.

Over to the men's side, where fourth seed Stan Wawrinka has reached the quarterfinals by winning a pair of tiebreaks. Wawrinka was a 7-6, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 winner against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

Spurred on by hundreds of flag-waving Japanese supporters at Rod Laver Arena, U.S. Open finalist and No. 5-ranked Kei Nishikori had little trouble in a 6-3, 6-3, 6-3 win over No. 9 David Ferrer.

WORLD CUP - WOMEN'S SUPER-G:

Lindsey Vonn mastered a tricky super-G race for a record-extending 64th World Cup victory. The American raced down the Swiss course in 1 minute, 23.55 seconds with only one rival able to finish within a second of her. Vonn became the all-time wins leader in women's Alpine skiing last weekend.

FIGURE SKATING - US CHAMPIONSHIPS:

Jason Brown has won his first U.S. figure skating title, holding off Adam Rippon after his big lead after the short program.

Brown finished with 274.98 points to beat Rippon by 2.5. Rippon won the free skate with 187.77.

Third-place finisher Joshua Farris had a chance to overtake Brown, but one of his triple-jump combinations didn't count because he did a double toe loop three different times.
