Sports Report: Giancarlo Stanton Signs 13-Year, $325 Million Contract

MLB:

The Miami Marlins have signed Giancarlo Stanton to a 13-year contract worth $325 million making it the richest sports contract in North American sports history.

The contract tops the $292 million, 10-year deal Miguel Cabrera agreed to with the Detroit Tigers in March. Stanton has a no-trade clause and can opt out of the contract after six years.

The 25-year-old Stanton led the National League with 37 homers, a .555 slugging average and 299 total bases last season while batting .288 with 105 RBIs.

NFL:

In the NFL, Pittsburgh beat Tennessee 27-24.

NBA:

In the NBA, Miami topped Brooklyn 95-83, Phoenix beat Boston 119-114, Denver bested Cleveland 106-97, Dallas blew out Charlotte 107-80, Orlando defeated Detroit 107-93, Memphis won against Houston 119-93, San Antonio beat Philadelphia 100-75, Portland topped New Orleans 102-93, and it was Chicago over the Clippers 105-89.

NHL:

Over on the ice, Tampa Bay bested the Rangers 5-1.

NCAA:

In Top 25 Men’s College Basketball, No. 7 Louisville crushed Jacksonville 88-39, Miami edged No. 8 Florida 69-67, No. 12 Villanova bested Md.-Eastern Shore 81-44, No. 13 Gonzaga topped No. 22 SMU 72-56, No. 14 Iowa St. won against Georgia St. 81-58, and it was No. 24 Michigan over Bucknell 77-53.

Vermont beat Siena 84-76.

NCAAW:

In Top 25 Women’s College Basketball, No. 6 Stanford upset No. 1 UConn 88-86, No. 4 Tennessee crushed Oral Roberts 91-39, No. 13 Kentucky topped No. 8 Baylor 74-64, and it was No. 17 West Virginia over Seton Hall 89-87.

Local:

The Times Union Center was denied in a bid to host NCAA men’s basketball tournament games from 2016-2018.
