Sports Report: England's World Cup Chances Dwindle

World Cup:

Uruguay beat England 2-1, Colombia defeated Ivory Coast 2-1, and Japan had a scoreless draw against Greece.

U.S. forward Jozy Altidore will miss Sunday's World Cup game against Portugal because of his strained left hamstring. He was hurt in the first half of Monday's win over Ghana.

A U.S. team spokesman did not reveal the severity of the strain but says the Americans are hopeful Altidore can return at some point during the tournament. The U.S. completes the first round against three-time champion Germany on June 26.

NCAA:

Syracuse is back as the No. 1 draw in college basketball. NCAA figures released recently show that Syracuse averaged 26,253 fans for its 18 home games at the Carrier Dome in 2013-2014 giving the team the highest attendance record in the NCAA, the team’s first as a member of the Atlantic Coast Conference. In its final season in the Big East, Syracuse averaged 22,439 fans.

MLB:

In interleague play, San Diego beat Seattle 4-1.

In the American League, the Yankees defeated Toronto 6-4, Oakland doubled up Boston 4-2, Tampa Bay blanked Houston 5-0, Detroit edged Kansas City 2-1, Cleveland bested the Angels 5-3 in 10, and it was Minnesota over the White Sox 4-2.

In the National League, the Mets slid past Miami 1-0, Atlanta shut out Washington 3-0, Milwaukee trumped Arizona 4-1, Pittsburgh beat Cincinnati 4-3 in 12, and Philadelphia topped St. Louis 4-1.

AHL:

The Adirondack Flames will play their first game on October 11th this year. The opponent hasn’t been decided yet, but the Calgary affiliate team remains hopeful for a successful season in their new home at Glens Falls.

WNBA:

In the WNBA, San Antonio squeaked by Seattle 87-82 in overtime, Los Angeles bested Tulsa 87-77.
