He joined the Sixers out of Syracuse as the 11th overall pick in the draft.

In the NFL, the Giants have signed 16 veterans already, addressing problems on both lines and in the secondary after they went 7-9 last season. General Manager Jerry Reese says that only means some needs have been taken care of.

Free agent defensive end Will Smith has signed with the New England Patriots.

The 32-year-old veteran had played his entire 10-year career with the New Orleans Saints. Smith has played in 139 NFL games with 120 starts and has 67 1/2 sacks, 20 forced fumbles and seven fumble recoveries.

A Brazilian soccer team has been ordered to play its next two home games in an empty stadium after a man was fatally struck on the head by a toilet bowl thrown from the stands during fan violence last weekend.
